Choose an Off Peak Day Return and travel back on an Off Peak service later that day, or enjoy more flexibility with an Anytime Return ticket and return back anytime within one calendar month using the Open Return search option. Using the Open Return search feature is especially handy if you haven't decided on the date or time of your return travel.

What is an Open Return Ticket?

An Open Return is a train ticket that allows you to decide when you want to make your return travel without specifying it at the time of booking. It is a really flexible travel option allowing you to return within one calendar month (depending on the validity of the ticket).

There is also the option of an Open Day Return which will allow you to return on a later service that same day without selecting a specific service (providing the service you travel back on is Off Peak).

Open Returns do not come with seat reservations due to the flexibility so this ticket is perfect for those who don't need to travel on specific services and can keep their travel options open.

Open Return Ticket FAQS

An "open return" isn't an official ticket type, it is just a way of purchasing a flexible ticket. There are multiple different ticket types that can be purchased as an open return.

An open return allows you to travel more flexibly without having to specify your return service. If you choose a day return ticket type, you can travel on any valid return service that same day. Other ticket types allow return travel within one calendar month of your outward journey.
Open return tickets can be purchased online via the Hull Trains website or app. Alternatively, you can buy tickets at the station in the ticket office or at a ticket machine.

If you are making your booking with Hull Trains, ensure you use the "Open return" option to view valid ticket types.
Open returns offer a much more flexible way of travelling, allowing you to purchase a train ticket without needing to specify your return journey.

There are various ticket types that offer the open return option with differing validity including: Anytime Return, Off Peak Day Return, Off Peak Return, Super Off Peak Return, Long Weekender Return, Hull Leisure Return
To put it simply, "open return" is just a method of purchasing a train ticket without having to specify your return date/time. It can make it a quicker booking experience as you will only select your outward service and your ticket type.

Some ticket types allow you to return within one calendar month so if you are unsure of when you will need to travel back to your origin station, an open return search is ideal.

The same ticket types are available no matter if you're making a regular return search or an open return search. If you want to see your return journey options on a date of your choice, you can use the normal return search.
The below tickets can be purchased as an open return - see validity information below:

Anytime Return: Return anytime within one calendar month of the date specified on the ticket
Anytime Day Return: Return anytime on the date specified on the ticket

Purchasing a train ticket as an Open Return will not give you the option of reserving a seat as you will not be prompted to select your return journey.

You may be able to reserve a seat for your outward journey when you select the service you wish to travel on.

If you do wish to reserve a seat for your journey, please get in touch to request one via X/Twitter or email.
Yes, you can apply a railcard on your Open Return booking. Railcard holders can save a third on the total cost of the ticket. Don't forget to bring your railcard with you to validate the discount.
