Which ticket is best for me?

We always aim to offer great value tickets and a big part of that is recognising that our customers' needs are many and various. We appreciate that the range of tickets and prices on offer can sometimes seem bewildering, so to help you choose the best ticket for your journey, we have drawn up this table to help you understand what each of the main ticket types can offer you.

Advance Single tickets which offer great savings if you can plan ahead and travel on a specific train Yes From 12 weeks before the date of travel up to the day before, subject to availability Only on the train(s) you have booked No, although date and time of travel can be changed for a £10 fee If your travel plans change, Advance tickets can usually be amended up to the day before travel for a £10 fee. Anytime Return A fully flexible ticket valid on any train Yes At any time up to just before you board Outward journey on any train within five days of the date printed on the ticket. Off-Peak Single/Return A fully flexible ticket valid only at off-peak times Yes At any time up to just before you board At any time at weekends, and outside of the peak travel times on Mondays to Fridays. Outward travel on the date printed on the ticket and return within one calendar month from the date printed on the ticket (expiry dates are usually printed on the return portion of the ticket) Yes, although a £10 fee may apply Off-Peak travel times vary by route – please enquire for specific times for your journey if you are unsure. Super Off-Peak Single/Return Similar to (and cheaper than) Off-Peak, but with less flexibility on when you can travel Yes At any time up to just before you board At any time at weekends but restricted to the quieter trains on Mondays to Fridays. Outward travel on the date printed on the ticket, return within one calendar month form the date printed on the outward ticket. Season Ideal for daily commuters, offering unlimited travel between the two points stated on the ticket for any period from seven days up to one year. A photocard is required. Carnet Books of 5, 10 or 20 tickets at a discounted price. Ideal if you make the same journey regularly but not every day Yes At any time up to just before you board On any train between the dates printed on the ticket (or on off-peak trains with a off-peak Carnet) Yes, subject to certain conditions (please enquire at time of purchase) These tickets must be dated in ink by the customer before travel. Dates must not be amended once written as an incorrect date invalidates a carnet ticket and you may be required to purchase a full fare ticket, pay a penalty fare, or face other action if fraud is suspected.
