Leading open access rail operator Hull Trains has hosted a special education event at the company’s state-of-the-art Learning and Development Academy in the city’s iconic K2 building.
Year 8 pupils from across East Yorkshire attended activities which included the chance to use Hull Trains’ pioneering simulator, giving the 12 to 13 year-olds a unique insight into the railway and how to stay safe when using trains and level crossings.
The event was a collaboration between Hull Trains, Network Rail, British Transport Police, Railway Children, Northern Trains, TransPennine Express and Siemens to engage young people in memorable ways. It was timed to take place ahead of next month’s annual Hull Fair, which is taking place close to the busy Walton Street Level Crossing.
Paul Jackson, Head of Customer and Stakeholder Engagement at Hull Trains, was a key part of the event. He said: "This is an incredibly important event that we're proud to take part in as part of our commitment to educating young people about rail safety. We particularly enjoyed welcoming a number of schools to our K2 Academy, the home of our state-of-the-art train simulator, giving them a real insight into the railways.”
Chloe Creffield, Network Rail community safety manager, added: “Hull Fair is one of the largest events of its kind, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors, which makes this the perfect time for our Rail Safety Ambassadors event.
"Working with our partners, we can provide practical, real-world safety advice helping young people understand that one moment of distraction around the railway can have life-changing consequences.”
Meanwhile, Hull Trains and its sister operator Lumo have revealed this week that their partnership with the Rail Safe Friendly Programme has led to 45 schools across the UK benefitting from vital rail safety education over the past year, leading to a social value of over £483,000.
The programme is dedicated to spreading the message of rail safety among young people, educators and parents in schools across the UK. Lumo and Hull Trains have supported the important initiative for the past three years.

The operator recently celebrated five million customer journeys between Hull and London and successfully combines sustainability with affordable fares, excellent service and support for local communities.
