Comedy takes centre stage on the latest episode of Hull Trains’ pioneering mental health podcast on a train, Moving Minds, ahead of Hull Comedy Festival’s twentieth anniversary.

The award-winning event takes over the city centre in November, with two weeks of stand-up, sketches, comedy theatre, improv and family shows. The festival utilises local venues including Hull Truck Theatre, The Brain Jar, Jubilee Central and The Fruit Market.

In the new Moving Minds episode out today, the festival’s creative director, Gary Jennison, chats to host Gemma Oaten about the impact a good laugh can have on wellbeing. He also discusses the important role the festival has in Hull and the local comedy scene.

The podcast series was launched earlier this year and has gone from strength to strength, with episodes recorded on Hull Trains journeys on the East Coast Main Line. Hull superstar Calum Scott recently shared his own mental health story in an episode with Gemma, in addition to a range of episodes with local people with powerful experiences.

Hull Trains is a proud long-term partner of the festival, this year supporting talent with travel to the festival. Highlights on the 2026 line-up include Frankie Monroe, Phil Walker, Harry Stachini and Sandro Four, who is currently touring the UK and Ireland for the first time.

Gary Jennison, Creative Director of Hull Comedy Festival, said: “The team at Hull Trains have been genuinely wonderful with their support for us over the years. Joining Gemma on Moving Minds is particularly special this year and gives us the chance to talk about why comedy is so important.

“Hull is bursting with talent and I’m very proud of the festival we’ve planned this year, twenty years in! We’ve got some unbelievable names coming to the city, but my favourite thing is always being able to showcase our local and regional comics.

“Thank you to Hull Trains for their support in all of its forms, we couldn’t do this without you.”

Richard Salkeld, Director of Communications and Partnerships at Hull Trains, added: “Our partnership with the Hull Comedy Festival is one that we’re very proud of and I’m so pleased that Gary agreed to join us on our Moving Minds podcast this year to talk about the important role the festival has in East Yorkshire.

“Championing the people and places on our route is very important to us, so I’m thrilled we were able to use our services to make sure comedians from the communities we serve could join the bill for the festival’s twentieth year.”

Moving Minds is available to watch on the Hull Trains YouTube channel and can also be streamed on every major podcast platform. The series continues to feature a range of celebrity guests, community champions and inspirational individuals from across the region.
