Hull Trains, the UK’s top-rated long-distance rail operator, has organised a special day out for inspirational people recognised at this year’s Bee Lady Day ball.

The unique trip was part of the celebrations around the annual Bee Lady Day, which honours the beloved Hull fundraiser Jean Bishop, who became widely known as the ‘Bee Lady’. She raised more than £125,000 for Age UK before she passed away at the age of 99.

Hull Trains proudly partnered with Age UK Hull and East Yorkshire to give twelve dedicated volunteers a memorable day out in Doncaster. The winners travelled in style, enjoying Hull Trains’ renowned First-Class service on the operator’s 'Jean Bishop (The Bee Lady)' train, as well as some extra treats from the onboard team.

Once they arrived in Doncaster, the group were surprised with a variety of craft activities at The Twisted Knot, a unique DIY workshop in the centre of the city. They then enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea at Cupcakes 2 Love. These activities were supported by FoxGlove Care, a residential care provider that plays a vital role in the community. The organisation is dedicated to delivering person-centred support for adults with learning disabilities and autism, with a particular focus on positive behaviour support to empower individuals and enhance their quality of life.

Nathan Rayne, Interim Service Delivery Director at Hull Trains, said: “Jean Bishop is someone that all of us in Hull are hugely proud to be associated with. It’s incredibly important that we celebrate her legacy every year and what better way to do that then to thank a group of people who are continuing the important work she started.

“Our team gave this inspirational group of people the VIP treatment they deserve and I’m very pleased they had a memorable day out.”

Johanna Leigh-Thompson, Director at Foxglove Care in Hull, said: “Recognising individuals who go above and beyond to support others in their communities is incredibly important, and it is an honour to celebrate people whose compassion, dedication and values align so closely with our own. Supporting initiatives that make a genuine difference is something we are deeply passionate about, and we are proud to be part of such a meaningful award.”

Natalie Spikings, Head of Operations at Age UK Hull and East Yorkshire said, “The Jean Bishop Legacy Award honours older people from across the region who have made an exceptional contribution to others, carrying on the spirit of Hull’s much-loved “Bee Lady”, Jean Bishop. The award recognises individuals who have devoted years to volunteering, played an active role in their communities, supported local people or shown remarkable strength in overcoming challenges.

“We are extremely thankful for the ongoing support from Hull Trains, whose involvement has helped us highlight and spoil these inspiring community champions and celebrate the positive impact they continue to make across Hull and East Yorkshire.”

Hull Trains customers can travel to destinations including Beverley, Hull, Doncaster, Grantham, Selby and London King’s Cross on eight direct weekday train services. The operator’s combination of sustainability with affordable fares, excellent service and support for local communities has consistently delivered a winning formula.

The operator proudly champions the communities it serves. Hull Trains last week helped Selby’s Craig Lewis begin his 1200 mile walk from John O’Groats to Lands End, raising money for local mental health charity The Big Communitea.
