A Selby woman is encouraging people to travel by train on the annual World Car Free Day, after swapping the road for rail for more than a year, using popular open access operator Hull Trains.

Josie Dobson was working as an academic mentor in Doncaster and decided she’d had enough of driving to work, saying: “The constant traffic and unpredictable journey times became too much for me. I got to the point where I was dreading my car journeys, and I knew it was time to make a change. Swapping the car for the train seemed like an obvious decision.”

Every year on the 22nd September, cities across the globe celebrate World Car Free Day, which encourages motorists to give up their car for the day. Rail is the best alternative way to travel, with just 1.5 percent of transport emissions coming from this mode of transport. In fact, one person driving in a medium petrol car produces more than four times as much greenhouse gas per passenger mile compared to travelling by rail.

For Josie, considering her environmental impact was a key reason for making the decision, with her saying: “I wanted to make a real contribution to cutting down my carbon footprint and getting the train really appealed to me as an easy way of doing that. You get a sense of satisfaction knowing that you’ve chosen a greener option. It’s also great being able to relax before a busy day and get your head into a good book!”

Hull Trains operates groundbreaking bi-mode trains which run on both electric and diesel. Running on electricity allows them to decrease emissions, whilst also decreasing noise pollution. In fact, travelling with the operator from Hull to London King’s Cross is a 92% saving of CO2 compared to using a car, with that figure increasing to 96% from Doncaster to the same destination.

The operator links the East Yorkshire region with direct, reliable and environmentally friendly travel to destinations including Doncaster, Beverley, Brough, Grantham and London King’s Cross. Hull Trains is celebrating its 25th anniversary this week and continues to lead the industry with excellent customer service, as well as support for local communities.

Josie says she’s got to know the team onboard very well over the past year: “You’re guaranteed a warm smile and a friendly chat whenever you travel with Hull Trains. I think that’s what really sets them apart from travelling with anyone else – they’re a close-knit team who always want to do their best for you. It makes a real difference and brightens your workday.”

She has this message to anyone else who is fed up of spending their days in the car: “Start with the small step of just trying the train for a journey you’d usually drive and see how it works for you. I’m certain you’ll find it more relaxing, quicker and you can even grab a nice snack whilst you finally have the time to relax!”
