RICH IN HISTORY AND NATURE

The attractive market town of Retford makes a wonderful place to spend a day wandering among some beautiful Georgian and French-inspired architecture. One highlight is the 14th Century St. Swithun’s Church in Cannon Square where can also see a cannon captured from the Russians during the Siege of Sevastopol at the end of the Crimean War in 1856. Head for a stroll by the Chesterfield Canal which runs through the town centre or spend the day in nature with the magnificent Idle Valley Nature Reserve and Sherwood Forest just on the doorstep. Retford has a rich history, with connections to the Pilgrim Fathers, who fled to America in 1620 after being persecuted for their religious beliefs, you can find out more at the Mayflower Pilgrim Visitor Centre and the Mayflower Trail.

On the third Saturday of every month, Retford plays host to a popular Farmers’ Market where a variety of locally grown produce including fruit and vegetables, jams, meat, honey, ice creams, dairy produce and freshly prepared food and drink is on sale.
