Selby

Due to its proximity to both York and Leeds and good access to the motorway network, the market town of Selby is the ideal base for visiting many of Yorkshire's delights. Walkers and cyclists can enjoy the pleasant countryside, especially the Trans-Pennine Trail cycleway with its direct link into the heart of York.

The town's popularity as a tourist destination can also be attributed to Selby Abbey (link opens in a new browser window) founded by Benedict in 1069. Its rich architecture and fascinating history attract tourists and worshippers alike as it continues to be an active parish church. A notable feature is the 14th century Washington Window, featuring the coat of arms (link opens in a new browser window) of the ancestors of the first president of the United States, George Washington. With three red stars above two red bands on a white shield, the design is said to have been the inspiration for the US stars and stripes flag.

In the past Selby had both a large coalmining and shipbuilding industry and was an important port because of its location on the banks of the tidal River Ouse. The riverfront area is now being revamped with modern housing and fashionable flats as part of the town's wider plans for residential and commercial expansion.
