London

London King's Cross station is the southern terminus for the East Coast Main Line. The area became known as King's Cross in 1835, so-called after a monument erected to the then King, George IV. Ten years later the monument was dismantled, but the name carried on.

As the largest urban area and capital of England, London has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The city boasts four World Heritage Sites (link opens in a new browser window): the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and St Margaret's Church; the Tower of London; the historic settlement of Greenwich; and the 300 acre Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

London is also the location of Europe's busiest shopping area - Oxford Street (link opens in a new browser window), which at nearly one mile (1.6km) is the longest shopping street in the world. The adjoining Bond Street (link opens in a new browser window) in Mayfair (link opens in a new browser window) is a well-known upmarket location, with countless fashion, jewellery, and designer shops. Knightsbridge, most famously home to the Harrods department store, lies just to the southwest. At London's heart lies the buzzing West End, where you will find everything from theatre to nightclubs and gourmet restaurants.

As a vibrant, multi-cultural city rich in heritage, architecture, literature, theatre and the arts, sporting venues, riverside boroughs, parks, and natural open spaces -- London really is a place where there is something for everyone.
