The historic market town of Howden has undergone something of a revival in recent years. It has fast become one of the most desirable locations to live in East Yorkshire, and in 2006 was featured in The Times top 20 list of places with the best standard of living in the UK. An influx of new shops and businesses and a buoyant property market, not to mention excellent motorway links via the nearby M62, have all contributed to a town that is definitely on the up.
The impressive semi-ruined Minster with its landmark tower visible for miles around is the town's focal point. Add to this the fine selection of specialist shops, tearooms and pubs in and around the Market Place, and the stunning examples of Georgian architecture to be found in the surrounding streets, it is little wonder that Howden has firmly established its place on the tourist trail.
In 2003 the national news agency, the Press Association (link opens in a new browser window), moved its operations centre to Howden, bringing several hundred employees to the area. Online retailer Ebuyer.com also recently relocated its headquarters from Sheffield to Howden, opening a vast warehouse and office building close to the nearby hamlet of Howdendyke (link opens in a new browser window).
